Board of Deacons
The Board of Deacons of the Canonsburg United Presbyterian Church has had a busy and rewarding 2007 serving the church, the community, and the Lord. Our 24 members met on the first Monday of each month, with a break during the summer.
Our activities were as follows:
1. VISITATION: Our deacons visited approximately 25 people each month. Each deacon was assigned a “Special Friend”, or shut-in, for monthly visits or contact.
2. CARDS: 150 sympathy cards were sent to members of our congregation and our community; 220 get-well cards were sent.
3. VALENTINE BOXES: 44 Valentine boxes were sent out to college students and those serving in the military. 3 phone cards were sent to those serving overseas.
4. FLOWERS: This sub-committee coordinated the placement and delivery afterward of the weekly flower arrangements. They also arranged for the Easter lilies and Christmas poinsettias; 70 lilies and poinsettias adorned our sanctuary and 40 were then delivered to our Special Friends.
5. FUNERAL LUNCHES: We provided 8 funeral lunches.
6. HOME COMMUNION: With Rev. Hamilton’s help, we served communion twice this year to our Special Friends (and their friends). On Maundy Thursday, we served 100 people and for World Wide Communion, we served 64 people.
7. TRANSPORTATION: We provided rides to church for those church members unable to drive here on their own.
8. OPERATION SHOEBOX: We collected and sent 267 shoe boxes full of gifts for Samaritan’s Purse.
9. DRIFT, KY: We coordinated a special collection of school supplies for kids in need in Drift, KY, the site of the mission which we have helped. Pam Amos personally delivered a van chock full of back-to-school supplies in July. The deacons also assisted in the collection, packing and delivery of used furniture, clothes and household items to Drift in Sept. The collected goods filled an entire full-size moving van, generously donated by South Hill Moving Co.
10. BLOOD DRIVE: We held 3 blood drives which collected 44 units of blood.
11. MISCELLANEOUS:
All this we did joyfully to serve the Lord.
