Session (Board of Elders)

The session is the governing body of the church.  The Elders are elected by the congregation for a three-year term in which they have approval over all events occurring within the church and outside and with all proposals brought to them from the various committees of the church.

The session of Canonsburg U. P. Church met the fourth Monday of the month for their regular stated meetings and for special called meetings when needed.

The Session members for 2007 were:  Kelly Alderson, Bill Beale, Ruth Bershok, Mary David, Brad Day, Joe Falascino, Diane Flynn, Ron Hartsock, Bob Hughes, Dick Hultman, Beth Hunt, Karen Jingleski, Doug Kearns, Wendy Lucas, Art Miller, Dan Miller, Rick Morrow, Beth Nixon, Sue Reinders, Dick Richardson, Laurie Rigby, Joe Schoeler, Fred Simpson and Dana Trainor.

This was a very busy year. Several Elders chaired the Standing Committees of Session and nine served as Trustees. Many were involved with the start of the Master’s Plan and many served on committees for the Master’s Plan Campaign.

In addition to working within the Church, Session continued to reach out to the community and beyond to reach those in need and to spread the Word.

We have continued to support Drift, Kentucky and added a special project for school supplies. Special collections were conducted for our servicemen and women and for the Pregnancy Resource Center of South Hills. We also participated in the Operation Christmas Child (Shoebox) project. We continue to host the Interfaith Hospitality Network Ministries in our church several times a year. We have charge of the Canonsburg-Houston Food Pantry and the Canonsburg-Houston Ministerium Toy Chest.

This is just a partial list of the many projects we are involved with and they are all highly successful due to the work of many volunteers and the outstanding support of the congregation.

Sunday School classes are offered for all ages and interests.  New this year is the Young Adults ministry for ages 18 to 30. They meet with Rev. Hamilton as their teacher and also meet off-site for social get-togethers. Several small groups also meet on a regular basis.

Carol Stewart retired in October and Personnel decided not to replace the Administrative Assistant position but after analyzing the needs in the office created a new position of Communication Coordinator.

A member of Session, Doug Kearns, was approved as Inquirer for Ministry of Word and Sacrament and began his seminary studies in September.

Session approved a policy on Discrimination and Harassment, a Policy on Clearance for our Professional Staff and volunteer who work with children under 18 and a Policy on Sexual Abuse of Children as presented by the Personnel Committee.

Our Music Ministry continues to inspire us with their moving and spiritual music.

We have received 75 new members this year including 10 Confirmands. We also baptized 10 children and 1 adult.

We were represented at all Presbytery meetings. Art Miller served as our permanent delegate and other Elders were appointed to attend as our second delegate.

Space doesn’t permit listing all the programs and activities Session was involved with in 2007. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact any Elder or Pastor Tom.

Once again, without all the loyal volunteers and the trust and support of the members of the Congregation, it would be very difficult for Session to carry out their responsibilities to further the work God has planned for Canonsburg U. P. Church.
