In The Pantry…

“Feed the hungry and help those in trouble.  Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you will be as bright as day.”                                                                                     Isaiah 58:10 NLT

Through the many ministries of our church we serve one another and the community.  We are called to live the life of a servant – those who contribute food, time or talents to the Canonsburg Food Bank are doing just that.

The Food Bank is located in our church in an area behind the Sanctuary that was previously used for storage.  Currently it serves over 140 families a month which includes over 100 children.  Donations of food, supplies and time keep the Food Bank running.  There are over 155 volunteer hours a month being donated by 20-25 people; some are members of our church as well as others from the community.  These hours include unloading and sorting donated food, help on distribution day – which includes passing out food, assisting with loading food in cars, making home deliveries for those without transportation, doing paperwork which includes processing current people and helping new applicants.  The ages of the volunteers range from 6 to 86!

As Food Bank Coordinator my responsibilities include organizing the food bank which includes sorting and distributing local donations and the monthly government food, maintaining paperwork for the families, organizing volunteers-individuals or groups, organizing food drives at the local schools, churches or community organizations and dealing with emergency sign ups.  Food is donated monthly from various local stores – it all has to be picked up and stored until distribution day which is the 3rd Saturday of the month.

Groups that have helped with the various jobs are FINKS, the 5/6th grade Sunday School Class, Sr. High Group, Boy Scouts and Girl Scout troops.  There is always great fellowship as we complete the necessary tasks; I have made many new friends since taking on this mission and encourage any group or individual interested in helping to contact the church office for details.
