Godly Passion

“Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” Luke 24:32

Dear Friends,

This past Sunday as we looked at Jesus encounter with the two disciples (Cleopas and his companion) on the road to Emmaus, we were focused mainly on one thing, passion. After recognizing it was Jesus who had journeyed with them, they reflected back and recognized that their passion had increased while they were with him. Those burning hearts were the sign.

As good presbyterians, passion is sometimes a four-letter word.

In ages past, presbyterians were staunchly against those low-brow rabble-rousers and all their enthusiasm. Our worship and polity (the way we do business) was marked by the phrase “decently and in order.”

There was certainly good reason it. An over abundance of passion can lead us to say and act in ways that are harmful to ourselves and others. We have a whole category of actions that we call “crimes of passion.”

BUT… it is equally unhealthy to deny our emotions, our hearts, our passions. Time and time again in the scriptures, God evokes passionate responses from his people. And a lack of passion is the crime that the Church in Laodicea is charged with, causing them to be spit out of the mouth of God.

So, here’s a quick question I’d like you to consider: how can you cultivate Godly passion in your life? Or how can we as a church, help you cultivate Godly passion in your life?

I’d love to hear some answers from you in the coming days and weeks. I firmly believe that passion is an important part of our encounter with Jesus and our ongoing journey of discipleship!

Passionately, Welcoming people to Grow in Jesus,

Pastor Don
