When It's Messy

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

- Romans 8:28

Dear Friends,

This past weekend, I had the absolute pleasure of officiating a couple joining together in marriage. The setting in Bedford, PA was beautiful, and despite the rough conditions the night before during the rehearsal, it was an absolutely gorgeous day when the wedding occurred!

Since the ceremony was outside, there was no reasonable opportunity to do a unity candle as a symbolic representation of joining together. Instead, they chose to unite two separate jars of colored sand into one jar. You’ve probably seen it before. I remarked about how impossible it would be to ever separate those two once they were poured out together - in the same way this couple would be united for the rest of their lives.

The finished jar of sand was beautiful.

As the violinist played, each of them took turns pouring a little sand from their jars into the larger jar. A little white, a little grey. A little more white, a little more grey. Even more white, even more grey… until a hand slipped and a bunch of that grey sand fell on the table beneath.

Everyone chuckled.

Whether it was impatience, nerves, a gust of wind, it didn’t really matter. Some of the sand was spilled.

In the moment, I thought of how perfect that image was of our marriages, of our lives, of our journeys of faith.

As hard as we try to create this beautiful image - in our marriages, in our lives, in our faith - it gets messy. Marriage is messy. Faith is messy. Life is messy.

The question is, what do we do when our marriage, our faith or our life gets messy?

In that moment in the ceremony, this couple chose to move forward. They didn’t stop. They didn’t pretend it hadn’t happened. They didn’t run off scared and ashamed that they’d messed up. They just chuckled and kept going.

What a great testament to each of us.

Marriages are messy. Faith is messy. Life is messy.

Don’t stop. Don’t ignore it. But don’t allow the mess to distract you from moving forward.

Remember - God can use even our mess to bring about amazing things in our lives and in the lives of people around us… if we don’t give up!

Despite our mess, we’re Welcoming people to Grow in Jesus,

Pastor Don
