Pentecost Sunday - Seeking God in Prayer

“The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of God’s people, went up before God from the angel’s hand.” - Revelation 8:4

Dear Friends,

This coming Sunday is Pentecost - literally, forty days after Easter. It was Easter that God turned the tables on death, taking on our sin and shame and showing us not only where it leads - but what God is going to do about it! Over the next forty days, as the community of believers heard this good news and encountered the risen Jesus (before his ascension), God was preparing them for something special.

They had no idea.

They would have never imagined that when they gathered in that upper room, forty days after Jesus’ resurrection, worshipping and praying, that their preparation was leading to their empowerment by God’s Holy Spirit. But sure enough, by wind and flame, the Spirit descended on them that day and blew them out of that room, into the city and the church was truly born that day!

We don’t know exactly what they were praying for, and maybe they didn’t either, but we know they were aligning their hearts and minds with God in preparation for this next great chapter of God’s mission in the world. How exciting!

This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday, and we’re calling the entire church in Canonsburg-Houston to stand and pray together at 3pm. But instead of assembling in one place, we want every neighborhood, every block, every part of our boroughs to be represented, so we’re asking everyone to simply step out of their homes at 3pm - onto their porch, onto their step, onto their stoop, and pray.

We ask you to pray for a fresh empowerment of God’s Holy Spirit in our community! We ask for you to pray for physical and emotional healing of our residents. We ask that you pray for unity among our churches and unity among our leadership. We ask that you pray for the love of Jesus Christ to rule our hearts and the Peace of God to lead us forward!

God responds to our prayers. And what’s more, when we pray, our hearts and minds are moved to align with God’s will. As we take steps forward in this unique situation where we find ourselves, let’s do it together, seeking God in prayer!

Welcoming people to Grow in Jesus,

Pastor Don
