New Year, New Intentions

“…what counts is the new creation.” - Galatians 6:15b

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year!

I hope you all had a blast, ringing in the new year Monday night - for those of you who stayed up! A quick look at what was happening in Times Square confirmed that we had it much better than they did!

With a new year comes an opportunity to start new habits, eliminate old ones and start fresh in some areas of our lives. Whether it’s reading that book, losing that weight, saving up for that trip or whatever it is, when the calendar starts over, it’s a natural re-start for our lives.

But what happens on day 2?

Resolutions can be great, and terrible at the same time. They’re great when they propel us forward, but terrible when they become the whip we flog ourselves with when we don’t live up to them.

I recently heard someone claim that they prefer intentions to resolutions. The idea that when you set more general goals, as long as your actions are moving in that direction, it’s positive. I find some value in that.

What I’m also intent on remembering is that the newness we’re all seeking, the ultimate betterment of ourselves, our lives, our bodies and souls, isn’t something that we can bring about on our own. It’s a God-thing.

Certainly, we can be moving toward that or away from it by our actions, absolutely. But the new creation that Paul talks about in Galatians, is something that happens to us, almost in spite of us, but not because of us.

So, set your goals, resolutions or intentions for this new year. I know I have mine. But rest not in your ability to accomplish them, but in the goodness and graciousness of God to accomplish so much more - in you, around you and through you.

Welcoming people to Grow in Jesus,

Pastor Don
