"Yinz" Are the Light of the World
“You are the light of the world.” - Matthew 5:14a
This past weekend, a group of us headed to Pine Springs Camp for a weekend retreat where we were able to play together, eat together, laugh together and of course, grow together as we prayed, worshiped and studied the scriptures! The text we focused on was Matthew 4:14-16, which begins with Jesus saying, “You are the light of the world.”
This can be a little startling, since John’s gospel tells us that Jesus claimed that he too, was the light of the world. How exactly is it that we could be the light of the world at the same time that Jesus is the light of the world?
Well, as it turns out, Jesus wasn’t pointing at Mary or James or Peter or Esther or any of the other thousands of individuals on that hillside as he shared the Sermon on the Mount. The you Jesus speaks is a plural you. Jesus was saying that “you all” - or to put it in language we understand: “yinz are the light of the world!”
What Jesus was saying is that there is something special, something intrinsically valuable, something unique about the way we live together as followers of Jesus, that is, itself, the light of the world! We, not me, us, not Gus, are the light of the world together.
If you remember, Jesus is not alone. Jesus is the second person of the Trinity, the eternal Son of the Father. Jesus is co-equal with God the Father and with God the Holy Spirit. Since before time began, the Triune God has existed in perfect community. And our community bears witness to their community, and in this way, we are the light of the world! It’s our life, lived together as followers of Jesus, that best exemplifies Jesus. It’s in the midst of our life, lived together, that Jesus lives. He did say, after all, that where “two or three gather in my name, there I am with them.”
It’s for this reason, that we simply cannot give up meeting together - for worship, for service - but also for meals, for fun, for laughter!
If it’s been a little while since you gathered with us, hear this as an invitation to come back! This Sunday, we’ll be celebrating several things, including some new members, our Cub Scouts and we’ll be blessed with our Children’s Choir to boot! Come and have some fun - laugh, learn and be the light of the world together with us!
Welcoming people to Grow in Jesus,
