Remember This When You Feel Discouraged

‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” - Revelation 21:4

Dear Friends,

So, how are you doing?

How’s work? How’s your family? How’s your health? How’s school? How’s that project coming? How’s your bank account looking?

I’m going to guess that at least one of those areas might have hit on a nerve. I’m going to hazard a guess that at least one area of your life isn’t functioning on all cylinders. And even if you’re a unfettered optimist, there’s a good chance that you experience some discouragement when you reflect on that area that’s out of sorts.

For those that aren’t high-flyers, constantly soaring on the wings of eagles, only brought low by a momentary thought, you don’t even need to survey a list to feel discouragement. It’s there, constantly gnawing at you.

As we’re going through this season of Lent, I’m asking you to Give up on some BAD things - things that get in the way of your spiritual well-being and your eternal destiny. Discouragement is one of those things.

You may not think so, but it does. If you are dis-couraged, you have literally lost the courage to do what is right in the moment… because you believe it is dis-connected from the future. “What does it matter if I try to draw close to God now, if God doesn’t love me or have anything good in store for my future?”

That’s a lie. But you can see how it will easily lead you astray.

The truth is that God’s love for you is greater than you could possibly imagine. The truth is that God has an eternal future for you that is greater than you could possibly imagine. The truth is that there will come a day when everything will be made new, when the full presence of God will be with God’s people, when there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.

Knowing that future, believing in that future, enables us to do the right things here and now. It gives us courage to live bold lives of love, knowing that nothing on this side of eternity is lost when it’s done in and for the God of the universe!

So, this Lent and beyond, give up discouragement by believing in the truth of the good future God has in store for you!

Welcoming people to Grow in Jesus,

Pastor Don
