Catch Them on the Bounce

“God's truth judges created things out of love, and Satan's truth judges them out of envy and hatred.” - Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Dear Friends,

This past Sunday we talked about judging people as one of those things that are so detrimental to our spiritual health and eternal destiny that we need to not only give it up for Lent, but give it up for good!

Not judging doesn’t mean we refrain from paying attention, evaluating, and determining what is harmful, unhealthy and sinful going on around us. It doesn’t mean that we encourage or condone behavior that is dangerous to ourselves or others. It doesn’t mean that we ignore things.

An important distinction between judging people and making sound judgements is the purpose.

As Dietrich Bonhoeffer shares above, God judges out of love, Satan out of envy and hatred. If we recognize unhealthy behavior, and our purpose is the well-being of the person, then we’re moving in the right direction.

While I’m not in the right position to offer assistance to a politician in Washington, an actor in Los Angeles or a singer in Nashville - despite what I may recognize as unhealthy behavior on their part, I am in a position to positively affect the people God puts in my face today. I am in a position to love them and encourage them in a healthy direction through my example and my support. When I have that relationship, I have the opportunity to speak truth into their lives, but even more importantly, to live the truth of God’s love in their lives.

If we judge people, writing them off and severing a relationship with them… there is a high likelihood that when it hits the fan, we won’t be in a position to help them at all.

If, on the other hand, we maintain that relationship, if we continue to love and support, even someone who is acting in obviously unhealthy behavior, we can be in a position to catch them on the bounce, as Bob Goff says. We can be in a position to, when and if they crash, when and if their unhealthy behavior comes to light, or sends them on a tailspin toward destruction… we can be there to lead them toward the light, before they completely succumb to the darkness.

Let’s keep on loving, before and after that bounce!

Welcoming people to Grow in Jesus,

Pastor Don
