The "Terrific" Bride of Christ
“Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready.” - Revelation 19:7
Over the years, I’ve officiated a lot of weddings. Some pastors that I’ve talked to complain about weddings. I don’t. I love them.
I love meeting with couples to prepare the ceremony, and especially to prepare them for the many years of marriage after the ceremony.
I love making my well-worn corny jokes at the rehearsal.
I love watching the bride walk down the aisle, and seeing the look on the face of the groom, and the families - and her too!
A wedding is one of those special occasions where people are actually open to hearing something profound, because they recognize, on some level, that they’re experiencing something profound.
And so, I love getting to tell a couple about the heart of marriage, and inviting 100+ guests, to listen in on these truths - hoping and praying that it encourages them, not only in their own relationships, but in their journey of faith.
I was reading Bob Goff’s Everybody Always recently, when I came across this question: “Do you know what makes the bride look so terrific?” I immediately thought of the dress, and about the possible connection between that and how God puts us in white robes in preparation for encountering Christ in glory.
But that wasn’t Bob’s answer.
In fact, it may have been even more profound.
Bob explained, “what makes the bride look terrific is everyone in the room knows the groom chose her to be his and she’s chosen him to be hers… I think it’s the reason God calls us His bride.”
We look terrific… because God has chosen us.
No, we’re not perfect, and we don’t look perfect. But we are and we do look terrific because God has proclaimed that we belong to him, always and forever, to enjoy him through eternity.
I don’t know what your day has been like, your week has been like, your month, your year, but I hope you’ll hear these words as a deep affirmation and encouragement.
You are terrific!
Not because I said so. Not because you put your make-up on or got your hair done, or you met your sales goal or you’ve posted that perfect Instagram picture or Facebook post.
You are terrific because God has chosen you, to be his forever.
Welcoming people to Grow in Jesus - one wedding at a time!
