Get in the Game

“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” - Colossians 3:17

Dear Friends,

No one wants to sit on the bench.

One of the most difficult aspects of being a coach, is having to pull kids out so that others can get in. Nearly every kid that comes off the field is begging to get back in the game the moment they’re out.

No one wants to sit on the bench.

When I played football, I was willing to play whatever position got me into the game. Offense, defense, special teams. I even practiced with the defensive line, in the hopes that I could get a few extra snaps.

No one wants to sit on the bench.

That’s why good teams and good teammates who aren’t on the field or on the court, are continually jumping to their feet, hooping and hollering, cheering and congratulating - if they can’t get in the game, they can at least cheer on their teammates who are in the game!

When it comes to the church, I don’t think it’s all that different.

Deep down, I believe everyone who comes to faith in Jesus Christ, everyone who has the Holy Spirit living inside of them, everyone wants to be in the game. Everyone wants to be involved in the great things that God is doing.

What gets in the way… is a sense or feeling that there’s either no room for me, or there’s simply nothing going on that’s worth my time and effort.

That’s simply not the case.

You have some tremendous gifts and talents that God wants to use, right here and right now. And I know this because God has blessed all of us with gifts and talents. They’re not all the same, but they’re all valuable. And God has also empowered us through the Holy Spirit to do some things that none of us ever imagined we could accomplish!

You don’t have to be an elder or a deacon in the church to use your gifts and talents - but if God calls you to that, God will equip you, and I trust that we will be a better church for it!

This Sunday, we’ll also be kicking off the conversation about how we can all financially contribute to what God’s doing in our community through Canonsburg UP. And honestly, that’s one way that we can ALL, regardless of which gifts and talents we possess, be a part of. Maybe we don’t all have the same means, but that’s not the point. Not everyone plays the same number of minutes in a game - but knowing you got in the game, knowing you contributed to the win, to the championship, makes it worth the while!

When VBS welcomes 200+ kids into our church to share with them the gospel - you may not be able to take off a week of work to teach them, but if you financially contributed to this church, you got in the game. When we send a team to continue our partnership in Lomas de Aguila, Honduras - you may not be able to travel with them, but if you financially contributed to this church, you got in the game. When we open the doors on Sunday morning for worship, when our UP With Kids Childcare Center opens every weekday morning, when Fresh Start Cafe finally opens across the street - you may not have been directly involved with those doors, but if you financially contributed to CUPC, you got in the game!

No one wants to sit on the bench.

As we finish out 2019 and look to 2020 - thank you for getting in the game and

Welcoming people to Grow in Jesus,

Pastor Don
