Clothe Yourself with Kindness
“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” - Colossians 3:12
Did you know that today is World Kindness Day?
Celebrated across the world to honor acts of kindness - random and otherwise. Flashmobs, concerts, kindness cards and more, highlight events that various countries do to raise awareness for these acts of kindness and encourage more of it.
Personally, I love hearing about those acts of kindness - the person who “pays it forward” by paying the bill at the drive-through for the car behind them. Or people who pay off the entire lay-away for families at Walmart at Christmas. Seeing even simpler acts like opening doors, offering you the right-of-way for a “Pittsburgh-left” turn, carrying someone’s groceries to the car or picking up spilled items in the store. When I hear about these acts of kindness, big and small, I know that my heart is warmed.
What I think is the biggest encouragement is that these acts are the in-breaking of God’s kingdom on earth. These acts are the good news of the gospel, God’s love for humanity, God’s forgiveness, lived out in real time.
We get more than enough division, discord, dishonesty and death that flash across our newsfeeds every day. We see constantly see the ugliness of sin - and there are whole business models that are built on riling up our fear, anxiety and anger. But we cannot let these things get in the way of the kindness of God that is evident throughout our world if we’re only willing to look and listen for it. And we cannot let it get in the way of us, showing kindness in our homes, in our jobs, in our neighborhoods.
God’s kindness toward you is real and true. It was shown in Jesus, and the ripples of that continue to reverberate all over our world. I hope and pray that today, on World Kindness Day, that you will not only share God’s kindness with others, but that you would experience it as well.
Welcoming people to Grow in Jesus, kindly,
