Still On The Path - But Watch For Updates

“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” - Proverbs 16:9

Dear Friends,

“We plan, God laughs” is an old yiddish proverb. It’s never been more true than in 2020!

How many plans have you made for the Spring and Summer, only to have them postponed and cancelled? Summer Camp? Picnics? Parades? Vacations? Graduations? We can make all the plans in the world, but something unforeseen can come in and blow it all away!

Originally, I was supposed to be gearing up to go to Honduras in 3 weeks, along with a team of 10 from our church, including Brennan! We would’ve connected with our partner community in Lomas del Aguila, worshipped together, helped build a house - it was going to be a beautiful week! But it was not to be.

I have had the pleasure of traveling to Honduras nearly a dozen times over the years to participate in a range of mission teams. In the midst of the beauty of the landscape and the people, I’ve learned so much. Maybe the biggest thing I’ve learned and re-learned is to be flexible!

You see, plans change.

We thought we were gathering to worship tomorrow night? Surprise! We’re on our way to a church service right now! We thought we were going to have a nice ride home with a cool breeze? Surprise! We’re going to get soaked in a torrential downpour! We thought we were going to do this or that, only to be continually surprised because plans change, things come up, nothing quite turns out the way we’d planned!

Even today, I’m writing this to you after waiting around all afternoon for a word from the government, seeing if our plans for Sunday would - surprise - have to change! So far, so good!

Just last night, the Task Force met and were sincerely anxious about the prospects of how a changing environment around us might force us into a different scenario for gathered worship this Sunday! All the hard work, all the planning that was put into this… anxious and concerned it could go sideways, that you our brothers and sisters would be upset and angry if we had to say “I’m sorry, you’re going to have to sit in the Fellowship Hall” or “I’m sorry, we’ve had to reduce our capacity and we don’t have room” or “I’m sorry, we’re having to postpone gathering entirely”

None of us like it when plans change. But sometimes… many times, plans change.

So far, we are still on schedule for gathered worship, this Sunday, July 12, at 8:30 am & 11:00 am in the sanctuary and Fellowship Hall, with limited seating and wearing masks. If this needs to change, we will let you know ASAP! But here’s what I’m going to do, I’m going to trust that you, as followers of Jesus Christ, willing to do for others as you would have them do for you, to share Christ’s love with them, sacrificially, that you will be willing to… go with the flow. I’m going to trust that you’re going to respond to whatever happens - our current plans, changed plans, blown up plans, whatever - with the same kindness, love and grace that God has shown us in Jesus Christ.

For that, preemptively, I’m going to say thank you!

Welcoming people to Grow in Jesus,

Pastor Don
