Don't Go Home

“Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love…” - Ephesians 5:1-2a

Dear Friends,

Don’t go home!

If you joined us for worship - in person or online - then you know what I’m talking about. If you didn’t, let me give you a quick synopsis.

Each one of us have been given a gift - we’re loved, forgiven and free - by the very God of the universe. And this year, this month, this week, this day - each day really - we are given the opportunity to run, walk, rest and live in that place of God’s love.

The image I left you with was an address - 101 God’s Love Way. And you’re invited to take up residence there… instead of the places you may have been living at before on Envy Lane, Shape Place, Anger Ave, Bitterness Blvd or any number of other dead ends that leave you acting and feeling worse and worse.

As this new year unfolds… I’m encouraging you not to go home to any of those places. Don’t get sucked in.

Mind you, it’s really easy, isn’t it? Every social media post of someone’s new car, new house, new job, new spouse, new vacation… it gives you the opportunity to be jealous and envious. Every time someone pulls out in front of you in their car, cuts you off, tailgates you or fails to drive fast enough so you’re tailgating them… gives you an opportunity to get angry. Every choice word, every snide comment, every sideways glance, every time you’re confronted with the person that hurt you in the past… gives you the opportunity to fall into a pit of bitterness. And how many times are you reminded, each day, of a past mistake you made - a word you said in anger or jest, a job you failed to do right or failed to do at all, a habit you tried to break but you fell back into once again… it’s like hands reaching out from behind an unseen curtain, dragging you into a closet of shame.

Don’t do it. Don’t go home!

The next time you find yourself in a situation like this. The next time you’re reminded of it, the next time you’re face-to-face with these past places… take a moment, and try this instead.

1) Close your eyes.

2) Take a breath.

3) Close your hands.

4) Breathe out this prayer:

Because I am loved by You, God

I choose to walk in Your love

I will live this moment in your hands

And release to you all of this

5) Open your eyes, and your hands, and your heart - and smile.

I hope you find the love of God to be with you every moment of your day. I hope you find encouragement and strength for the journey - and I hope every time you’re tempted, you don’t go home… at least, not to your old home. Instead…

We Welcome You to Grow in Jesus - in your new home here, in God’s Love!
