Remembering His Faithfulness
“Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years…” - Deuteronomy 8:2a
This Sunday is a big day! Not only is it Valentine’s Day, but it’s also our Annual Congregational Meeting!
I know, I know, it’s not actually more exciting or highly anticipated than Christmas or Easter, or the day pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training or the first day of hunting season. But it is important.
On the one hand, it’s important to have a process by which we track and report how we’ve been faithful with the finances God has blessed us with, how we’ve managed our talents and what we are looking at for the coming year. This decently and in-order practice is a hallmark of our particular branch of the christian church and it’s something I deeply appreciate. It keeps individuals and communities from getting too far beyond their skis and running into trouble.
But on the other hand, it’s a vital spiritual practice that over and over throughout scripture, God is commanding his people to do. God calls them to remember who they were, remember where they’ve been, remember what God has done for them and remember why God did it. Over and over again, the command to remember - even and especially during the seasons of struggle and loss and grief - comes through loud and clear.
We are in the middle of one of those seasons. I certainly hope we’re closer to the end of this than we are to the beginning, but we’re still not sure of what our church, our community and our world will exactly look like when we come out the other side. And while it’s important to keep looking and planning and hoping and dreaming, it’s also vitally important to spend enough time remembering where we’ve been and most importantly, how God has been at work in our community over this past year.
The time we take for our annual meeting - the printed report, the videos, the verbal messages - all of it serves the purpose to remember, ultimately, what God has been doing here this past year.
I hope you’ll be able to join us, whether in-person following the 11:00am worship service, or via Zoom (details below). I hope you’ve taken time to read through the report - you can download it from the website if you weren’t able to pick a printed version up. And I hope you’ll also take some time to reflect on what God’s been doing here this past year. When we remember, well, we can find encouragement for the journey ahead, because the same God that has seen us through before, promises to walk alongside us every step of the way into the future!
Welcoming you to remember, and Grow in Jesus!
