Caring for Our Community
I’m super excited to share that we have been invited, and our Session has committed, to being part of a Community-Wide event to bless and care for our community later next month.
Do you remember, just a few weeks ago, when we looked at Galatians 2? Paul shared the story of going back to Jerusalem to check in with the Apostles and leaders of the church – where they affirmed his ministry and he explained, “all they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I had been eager to do all along.” (Galatians 2:10)
On October 18, K-Love, in partnership with Neighbor to Neighbor of Southwestern Pennsylvania and 24 area churches are hosting “Unite the City” – an initiative to serve those in need, especially in preparation for the coming winter season. There are three distinct ways that you can help.
First, Canonsburg UP Church has been tasked with collecting New Boys Coats, size 0-18 for distribution at this event. Over the next four weeks, we will be collecting them at church to deliver them to the event for distribution. Are you able to purchase one? Bring them in. That’s our first ask.
Second, Canonsburg UP Church will be hosting a booth to promote our church and the various ministries we have to serve our community, alongside the other participating churches. Are you willing and able to help set-up, run or teardown the booth on Saturday, October 18? Set-up will be between 8a-11a, with an Opening Ceremony at 11a, Registration and Distribution beginning at 12p and Closing Ceremony happening at 4p. If you are interested in being a representative of Canonsburg UP Church to our community, contact the church office to get connected to Colleen Yarbrough.
Third, there are a LOT of opportunities to serve at this event, beyond just our church’s booth. Neighbor 2 Neighbor is seeking people for the Event Setup Team (set up tables, tents, layout at 8a), Sorting and Organizing (items for distribution 8a-11a), Greeting and Registering (welcoming neighbors and signing them up 11a+), Personal Shopping Assistants (guiding individuals & families through event 12p-3p), Prayer Team (pray with individuals and families 11a-3p) and General Volunteers (wherever needed). You can go sign up to help right now: www.n2nhelps.org/contact-10
Events like these, partnering with other churches, organizations and believers from across the theological and practical spectrum are some of the most powerful and faithful witness that we have to Jesus Christ – and it goes back to the Early Church itself! What a great gift we can give, the good news of hope and love, lived out in such a tangible way next month and in the coming weeks leading up to it as we collect boys coats, size 0-18 and prepare for this wonderful event.
Welcoming You to Grow in Jesus – United across this community to care for our neighbors,
Pastor Don
