Welcome Back, Rev. Mayo!

Early the next morning Abraham got up and returned to the place where he had stood before the Lord.” – Genesis 19:27
Dear Friends,

It brings me great joy to REMIND you that this Sunday we will have ONE single Worship Service at 10am as we welcome back the Rev. Dr. David L. Mayo and his wife Loretta as we continue to celebrate our phenomenal history – 250 years of serving God and our community at Canonsburg UP Church!

The Mayo family (Dave, Loretta, Becky and Lindsay) came to Canonsburg United Presbyterian Church in 1992 when Dave was called as Pastor.  Becky and Lindsay were literally raised in the hallways of CUPC.  After twelve wonderful years of ministry, the Mayo’s moved to The First Presbyterian Church of Greenwood, SC, where Dave served as Sr. Pastor.  After eight years in Greenwood, Dave was called to the Senior Pastor position at The First Presbyterian Church of Marietta, GA.  In 2015, the Lord surprised Loretta and Dave by calling them to do something they had never imagined, start a new church.  And so, Marietta Community Church was birthed.  Witnessing God’s faithfulness as this infant church matured, bought property and constructed a new home in Metro Atlanta was an amazing journey for the Mayos.  In 2024 Dave turned the reigns of leadership of MCC over to a new Senior Pastor and retired.

Today, Loretta and Dave live near Greenville, SC, close to grandchildren.  Loretta and Dave are greatly enjoying retirement but also failing retirement as they both do part-time consulting (Loretta with a Financial Planning Firm and Dave with churches).

Becky and her husband (John) have two awesome sons (Rowan and Benton).   Becky is the Senior Director of Children’s Ministries at a thriving church in Spartanburg, SC.  Lindsay is the Chief Legal Counsel for a medical company in Metro Atlanta that specializes in regenerative medicine.

“Speaking for our whole family, we owe a great debt of gratitude to CUPC for helping raise our girls and for the lessons of service, compassion and leadership, that were shared by the wise members of the CUPC for twelve years.  The Canonsburg community and CUPC holds a very dear place in our hearts, and we are blessed to be a small part of the great story of a wonderful church.”

Speaking for our entire Church Family, I’m very excited to have Dave and Loretta with us for worship (and our light luncheon to follow in the Fellowship Hall), to celebrate with them what God has done through their ministry here, and what God has done in their lives and among us in the past twenty years as well!

Even if you never knew Dave and Loretta and their daughters – I didn’t come to Canonsburg until a decade after they had left – you are a recipient of their blessings through the people and ministries that were birthed and nurtured during their time here.  And I am absolutely certain that you will be blessed by their presence and all of the special elements of worship this coming Sunday.  Just being together for one single service bring a burst of vitality to our worship.

Before we get there – don’t forget that tonight we will have our Ash Wednesday Soup Supper (6p in the Fellowship Hall) and Service (7p in the Sanctuary) as we begin the Season of Lent and the Invitations to Formation in Jesus!

Welcoming You to Grow in Jesus,

Pastor Don
